Sugar maple conditioned at 8 percent NC was sanded with aluminum oxide- and garnet-coated abrasive belts of similar weight and particle size distribution of mineral. Three grit sizes (60, 100, and 150) and platen pressures (0.50, 0.75, and 1.00 lb./in. ) were tested. Regression equations were developed for the stock removal rate for all sanding situations of grit type, grit size, and platen pressures. Initially, garnet removed stock at a higher rate, but after an hour aluminum oxide removed stock at a higher rate.
