Strength and Stiffness of Composite Floor Joists

The study showed that composite joists made with oriented flakeboard cores are superior in strength and stiffness to joists made with randomly oriented particleboard cores. Joists with oriented flakeboard cores had greater stiffness and a higher safe load capacity than No. 2 southern pine lumber. Based upon stiffness, a variety of veneer species can be used alone or mixed to provide practical spans for joists. Stiffness controlled the design spans rather than strength.
