Strength Retention in Wood Decayed in Small Weight Losses

This study was designed to examine the relationship between strength retention and weight loss for a number of wood species both domestic and tropical. The fungi used were Poria monticola, brown-rot and Polyperus versicolor, white-rot. The insensitivity of the weight-loss method as an indicator of strength reduction was demonstrated. Modulus of rupture and work to maximum load in static bending were often drastically reduced with little or no weight loss. In this study, decay caused by brown-rot generally induced higher strength losses than that caused by white-rot. Among the brown-rotted woods, some showed much less strength retention than others. This variation was attributed to different degrees of cellulose hydrolysis.
