Homogeneous and oriented-face, random-core, three-layer flakeboard stiffness is compared to that of softwood plywood. Flakeboard with MOE ranging from 500,000 to 1,500,000 psi were compared to plywood having an MOE of 1,800,000 psi, over a thickness range of 0.30 to 1.0 inch. Flakeboard panel weight ranged from 1.10 to 1.50 times that of 1/2 inch plywood. The impact of panel weight on market acceptance, freight costs, and plant productivity are projected to relative rates of return on investment. Panels with highly oriented face layers appear to have significant economic advantages.
