A method and prototype machine have been developed for producing structural member, such as 2 by 4’s, from wood particles on a continuous belt press with special provision for incorporating continuous strands of high tensile strength into the structure, parallel to its length. The strands which can be glass fiber, aluminum wire, or other material, are prestressed as the matrix is formed on the machine. The prototype machine, process characteristics, and limited test data are discussed, as well as needs and plans for future development.
