Surface Laminating and Edge Treatment Practice on Particleboard Panels

This discussion on surface laminating and edge treatment covers solutions to problems of warpage, delamination and grain telegraphing in laminating flakeboard table tops and other laminated products. It is a process developed by D. J. Clapper of Clappers Manufacturing Inc., Meyersdale, Pennsylvania. They use 3-ply board and a density of approximately 45 pounds with a 6 to 8 percent moisture content. They first cut the core of flakeboard with an ordinary rip saw, then trim to the exact size. The edge bands and cores are then roughed out. The cores are then sprayed with a glue from an agitating drum. The edge core is then placed in a hydraulic press and the excess is trimmed. The core then passes to a three-drum sander for sanding both face and back. All wood bands are applied with neoprene glue. The core is also sprayed on both sides with glue. Pieces are then placed on a conveyor and dried at a temperature of 180? – 200?F. The back is then laminated and the top sheet then applied. It then goes to a pinch-roller and then to the machines for shaping and routing. Scratches are rubbed out with 400-600 grit wet-dry sandpaper and the sheen brought back by means of rubbing compound. This company prefers neoprene adhesives to allow movement and creep from changes in temperature during shipment or in normal use and eliminates a source of moisture from being introduced into the core. They also reprocess their plastics to remove any future reduction in dimension.
