The use of thin layer chromatography for determining phenolic intermediates is discussed. A specific use for thin layer chromatography is given in which actual reactions are analyzed. The effect of varying the formaldehyde-phenol ratio is shown. The use of reaction variables in “tailoring” phenolic resins for changing requirements is shown to be of practical value in the laboratory. In this manner, theoretical and kinetic studies can be translated into practical results.
