Work of Bethel and Hader and Fleischer, along with other investigators was analyzed and related to practical veneer drying applications. Three theoretical stages in veneer drying were named as follows: l) Accelerating rate, 2) constant rate, and 3) falling rate. The opinion was expressed that the handling of the cut and clipped veneer before drying is the most frequent cause of drying difficulties, especially with thin stock. It was observed that new tools, such as the Laucks Sentry Continuous Moisture Detector have made possible increased production and definite control of the final moisture content of veneer before it is assembled into plywood. Lacking at this time is a device to enable practical segregation of wet veneer before it is fed into a dryer. Although in most cases greater regulation of temperature would be helpful, this is not considered practical in modern, high-speed dryers. If the sheets being dried are valuable, temperatures below 212?F may be used with correspondingly longer drying times and the relative humidity regulated to aid uniformity of the final moisture content. Above 212?F., control of this sort is not possible.
