Aromatic residual petroleum oil No. 4 was used as a solvent for pentachlorophenol in retentions of about 5 lbs./cu.ft. for red oak, 8 lbs. for Douglas-fir, and about 17 lbs. for southern pine. This provided excellent protection against checking in laminated beams of the three species over a 10-year period, while the beams were exposed to weather on horizontal racks at Madison, Wis. Beams treated with a waterborne preservative checked very badly and, in general, also gave lower block-shear strength at the end of the exposure period than those treated with oilborne preservative. Resistance glue-joint delamination was excellent in all beams.
