Three charges of 2.5-inch (nominal) diameter red oak rounds were kiln-dried. The occurrence of honeycomb in the rounds after drying was positively correlated to the initial green density (green weight/green volume). For example, in the most dense 15 percent of the oak rounds, 1 out of 3 pieces contained honeycomb; in the least dense 15 percent of the rounds, only 1 out of 40 pieces contained honeycomb. The occurrence of honeycomb was also positively correlated to the initial moisture content and negatively correlated to specific gravity.
