This paper discusses the development and use of a longitudinal moisture gradient meter for pencil slats. Moisture meters are used in the dry kiln to measure how drying has progressed. It is in the last days of drying that the instrument becomes critical in its use, because the operator needs to decide when to pull the charge, based on the average, moisture content of a sample of slats. The moisture gradient meter determines the average moisture gradient of the sample of slats and displays this information on a computer monitor. This information can help the operator to decide to continue drying, begin equalizing, or pull the kiln load.
