The Effect of Glue-Line Properties on the Strength of Thin Veneer Laminates

A comparison was made of the Young’s static modulus of elasticity in bending of yellow poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera L.) beams laminated with veneers of various thicknesses and bonded with a phenol-resorcinol adhesive. It was found that the apparent Young’s modulus, obtained by neglecting horizontal shear, was a hyperbolic function of the span-depth ratio, from which the true Young’s moduli and rigidity moduli were calculated, using equations based on the simple theory of strain-energy in bending. The pure Young’s moduli obtained from the differences in deformation at midspan and at points of loading in third-point loaded beams agreed closely with the true values calculated from the span-depth ratio method. The study also indicated that the effect of glue properties on the strength of veneer laminates could be clearly established, and that the efficient use of veneer-resin systems can improve the properties of veneer.
