The effect of log length and lumber thickness over-allowance on lumber recovery was analyzed through a sample of 879 logs and 600 boards of the most common lumber dimension produced, 3/4-inch thickness. The study was carried out in six sawmills considered to be representative mills of the forest industry in the state of Durango, Mexico, with band head saw widths of 6, 8, and 10 inches, representing 22, 40, and 20 percent of the band sawmills, respectively. The results indicate that with adequate control of log bucking practices to conform with the correct log length allowance, it is possible to achieve a 4.34 percent decrease in log volume input for the same level of lumber output. With the control of lumber thickness allowance through the reduction of sawing variation and set work adjustments, an additional 6.32 percent of lumber yield could be obtained.
