Several European processes are being marketed in the U.S. Europe is ahead of America in total production but not in technical development. European processes have too many gadgets and require too many employees to keep them running. A typical American plant processes approximately 30 tons of kiln-dried, solid wood waste per day and produces a board of 32 pounds per cubic foot density. The particles are generated by a hammermill and both fines and oversized particles are discarded. The most highly mechanized German process has a capacity of 20 tons per day. The principal products are wall board and furniture core ranging in density from 37 to 56 pounds per cubic foot. Low production rate is caused by non-catalyzed urea resin requiring a 25-minute press cycle. The raw material is round pulp bolts reduced to shavings of the splinter type. Great care is required in bark removal and only the fines are removed from the furnish. Resin is mixed continuously from spray nozzles. The mat is formed continuously, cut to length, prepressed and stored in a press loader before hot pressing. Typical of smaller plants in Sweden and Germany is one processing 8 to 10 tons per day. Roundwood bolts are debarked manually. The particle mats are formed in a batch-type operation.
