The Floating Bar . . . a New Approach to Veneer Cutting

A conventional lathe was modified by adding a hydraulic cylinder to each end of the pressure bar frame and freeing the frame from the clearance setting mechanism, thereby enabling the bar to exert a constant pressure in pounds per lineal inch of log. Advantages of this method are elimination of the problems of backlash due to wearing of the mechanism and the ability to adjust pressure while the lathe is running.
