The Future of the New Southern Pine Plywood Industry

The southern pine plywood industry cannot become a full-fledged industry overnight. The industry has potential, but it needs time and proper care. Since fir plywood cannot keep up with the demand for plywood, southern pine plywood has not been barred from the market. Plywood demand has increased ever since its beginning. One thing plywood has on its side is that 2.3 square feet of plywood can be produced from every board foot of the log compared with 1.15 board feet of lumber from a board foot of a log. Since stand sizes in the South are of varying sizes, an integration of paper and plywood plants is necessary to utilize the timber at an improved level. This is an important factor when considering growth of the industry. Maybe the most important benefit of insured growth was the approval by the Douglas Fir Plywood Association. Now southern pine plywood is considered the equal of all top grade softwood plywoods.
