Most overlays are derived from paper products and are used to upgrade three major forest products–plywood, lumber, and composition board. Upgrading these products enhances their market value and makes them more competitive with substitute products. The majority of overlayment occurs in the plywood industry. This article surveys the major types of overlayment materials regarding manufacture, application, and uses.
