The Manufacture of General-Purpose and Decorative Pressed Wood Boards By a Dry Process

The objective of the installation discussed was to produce a versatile line of boards in thicknesses from 1/16-to 3/4-inch with a wide range of appearances and properties. This was made possible by development of a unique particle-producing process. The particles are sliced in a longitudinal-transverse plane, and are called crosscut fibers or crosscut flakes. Otherwise, the process is similar to that for other dry process boards. Advantages of the sliced particle are 1) most of the original strength of the wood is retained, 2) energy requirements are low, 3) wood not usually suitable for fiber production can be used, and 4) boards retain a natural-wood appearance. The process produces general-purpose plain boards, thick core boards, and decorative boards.
