Last year, the U. S. government spent over 16 billion dollars in direct cash outlays for military construction, office buildings, post offices, research centers, schools, hospitals, and interstate highway systems. These as well as a number of indirect programs involving loans, grants, and mortgage insurance programs, bear a direct relationship to lumber markets. To participate in direct government purchases, a firm must first arrange to be placed on one or more of the government bidding lists used to contact, potential suppliers. Some of the indirect programs are particularly attractive to wood suppliers, these include the College Housing Program, The Federal Housing Administration Home Improvement Program, the Urban Renewal Program, the Capehart Housing Program, and the Federal Highway Program.
