The work demonstrates two techniques for measuring surface strength of particleboard. One of these is a technique in which a circular metal cylinder is glued to the surface of the board and pulled off in a direction normal to the surface. This technique has been proposed as a “standard” test method in the Canadian Standard for Mat-Formed Particleboard CSA0188. The second technique consists of gluing a 1-inch square hardwood block to the surface of the board and removing it in torsion shear, using a conventional torque wrench and a slightly, modified 1-inch, eight-point socket. This shear test places greater demands on the adhesive, and it was found that neither a contact cement nor the commonly used hot-melt cement were strong enough to carry the shear load. The two tests were examined on commercial particleboard made in. Canada which had a fourfold range in surface strength.. The results of the two test techniques correlated with each other (r=0.93).
