Formulas used in the case of homogeneous materials have given satisfactory results in most directions where the continuity of certain density layers exist. However, in the radial direction, this is not the case for conifers and probably for ring porous hardwoods. This research clearly indicates the fallacy of assuming uniform strength distribution especially in the case of compression in the radial direction where springwood and summerwood bands of distinctly different densities are present. This would probably also be the case in the radial direction for conifers and ring porous hardwoods. When the height of sample increases, the energy to deform a weak layer will not increase. However, other layers may absorb a fraction of the total energy and the height effect cannot be excluded completely. This research suggests that mathematical formulas derived for other materials involve certain assumptions that may not apply to wood, especially in its transverse direction.
