The Relationship Between Crook of Green and Seasoned Yellow-Poplar 2 by 4’s

Crook of each piece of a sample of 294 8-foot 2 by 4’s sawed from logs from second-growth yellow-poplar trees was measured in the green condition immediately after sawing and after seasoning to 10 percent moisture content (MC). Observations of crook at the two moisture conditions were compared and related to growth ring angle, log diameter, and height of log in tree. Most of the crook which was present after seasoning occurred in the green condition immediately after sawing due to growth stress release. Mean crook increased only 1/32 inch due to seasoning; one-third of the pieces exhibited the same crook after and before seasoning, and 15 percent of the pieces were crooked less after seasoning. Crook for both moisture conditions and the difference in crook between, the two increased with increasing growth ring angle, being minimum for flatsawed pieces and maximum for quartersawed pieces. Crook of both green and seasoned pieces was positively related to and significantly correlated with growth ring angle. A significant inverse relationship existed between crook and log scaling diameter and/or log height within the tree.
