The Screw-Holding Power of Veneered and Laminated Wood Panels

Solid wood, plywood, lumber-core, and laminated panels were examined to compare screw-holding power. In a preliminary trial the holding power of the veneered panels was higher than that of solid panels. In all-veneer panels the panels of thinner veneers were stronger than those of thicker veneers. Better screw-holding ability was found to be a function of glue-line properties. The main experiment investigated three adhesives: urea formaldehyde resin catalyzed for both cold and hot pressing, and a film-type phenol-formaldehyde. Four veneer thicknesses (1/10, 1/16, 1/20 and 1/32 inch) of Liriodendron tulipifera L. were included. Strength improved with a decrease in veneer thickness. Hot press panels were stronger than those prepared in the cold press. Considerable compression in the hot-pressed panels increased their strength over cold-pressed panels. Screw-holding power of panels made with sheets of veneer is greater than that of solid wood.
