Shrinkage measurements of cell walls and cell cavities were made on water-leached microsections of California redwood heartwood. Substantial cell-cavity reduction occurred in the absence of casehardening stresses. Reduction in cell-cavity size, caused by circumferential shrinkage of the cell walls, accounted for more than one-half the shrinkage obtained in springwood tissue and about one-fourth of that in summerwood tissue. Radial walls shrank relatively less than did tangential walls. Drying of microsections soaked in organic liquids did not substantially alter the pattern of shrinkage.
