The Story Behind . . . the New Southern Pine Plywood Industry

From tests at the U.S. Forest Products Laboratory in Madison, Wisconsin, southern pine plywood has been proved equal to Douglas-fir plywood as a competitive sheathing grade. Since this declaration three companies have begun plans for plants in the South. Studies show that southern plywood is practical and probably profitable. A Commercial Standard 259-63 is being developed which will be completed soon. Only Pinus palustris, P. echinata, P. taeda, and. P. elliottii will be acceptable for use as outside plys. The Douglas-Fir Plywood Association will accept the new standard and will use it in the facilities of the South. Southern pine plywood will only dent the southern market at first and may eventually move up the Middle Atlantic.
