The thermal conductivity of plantation grown white pine (Pinus strobus) and red pine (Pinus resinosa) at two moisture content levels

The thermal conductivity values for white and red pine at two different moisture content levels were measured. When ovendry, the thermal conductivity of the white pine was 0.078W/m-K and was about 10 percent lower than red pine. At a nominal value of 12 percent moisture content, the thermal conductivity values were essentially equal. The data are useful when calculating the energy required to kiln dry lumber and for calculating the thermal insulating value of log homes made from the species.
