Small green specimens of beech were subjected to drying temperatures of from 25 to 100?C with EMC controlled to provide a slow drying rate and a fast drying rate. Tangential shrinkage was less when dried at a fast rate and at temperatures above 55?C. Radial shrinkage was less when dried fast at all temperatures above 25?C. Little or no variation in shrinkage rate of Scots pine was observed when dried fast or slow at a given temperature. Shrinkage of about 1 percent radially and 2-1/2 percent tangentially occurred before reaching 30 percent moisture content (the usually observed fiber saturation point).
