A mathematical model that allows the analysis of surface area as a function of particle thickness, porosity, roughness, and wood density is described. The model considers average roughness and average step size as roughness measures. A theoretical relation- ship between particle thickness, roughness, and the specific particle surface area was determined. Based on inputs of roughness and porosity, preliminary data was developed to calculate specific surface area. It was found that specific surface area decreases with increasing particle thickness. Both surface porosity and roughness had a decreasing effect on calculated specific surface area. The theoretical approach considered in this study could be used as an initial step to analyze optimum amount and homogeneous distribution of resin in particleboard manufacture.
