Recent work by the authors has been concerned with the manufacture and mechanical properties of three-layer composite boards. The boards consisted of outer surfaces about 1/8 inch thick made of white pine wood flakes, surrounding a core about 1/2 inch thick made of particles of Douglas-fir or grand fir bark. The aim was to produce a board which would not only utilize bark, but also be suitable as structural board for relatively low stress applications such as sub-flooring or roof sheathing. Some thermal properties of the boards,were determined and compared with those of existing comparable products. Data were obtained for boards with densities of about 34, 42, and 52 lb. ft3. The results showed an increase in thermal conductivity (decrease in insulating value) with increasing specific gravity. The boards containing Douglas-fir bark gave lower conductivity values than those containing grand fir bark, and both types of board proved to be better insulators than commercial particleboard.
