Availability of several studies made of thickness and percentage of bark is noted. Recent work involving inner and outer bark of 13 conifers and six hardwoods used commercially in British Columbia is summarized. Averages of bark thickness, moisture content, and specific gravity of both inner and outer bark are tabulated, and volumes of bark lost in voids are given for most species. Effects of position on tree are tabulated for the three most important species, Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco), western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla (Raf.) Sarg.), and western redcedar (Thuja plicata Donn). Inner bark thickness decreases toward the top of the tree. Moisture content and specific gravity differ considerably between inner and outer bark but are not influenced greatly by position on tree. Outer bark is much more variable than inner bark.
