Exhaustive coverage is made of the use of wood in heavy construction. First, wood is compared to other structural materials, particularly steel, with regard to fire resistance, strength properties, and volume requirements. This is followed by a consideration of the types and design of sawn timber structures and a review of the advantages and disadvantages of sawn timber versus glulam construction. The remainder of the paper deals with glulam technology, covering the following topics: 1) types of construction; 2) grades of laminates and whole members; 3) strength properties; 4) manufacturing considerations including types of end joints, control of moisture content, types of glues used, placement of knots, pre-gluing of joints, assembly methods, preservative treatment, finishing, and quality control; and 5) future research needs.
