To determine the effectiveness of light gage steel as a local reinforcement in timber structures, beams subjected to the primary forces, shear and bending, were tested. Shear test beams were loaded to produce high shear stresses and were reinforced in the high horizontal shear stress areas. Moment test beams were loaded to produce high bending stresses and were reinforced in the high bending stress areas. Timber used was no. 2 southern pine. Nailed (with various of nails) and glue-nailed fastenings were investigated. Nailed reinforcement proved to be 90 and 95 percent efficient for the moment and shear test respectively, while the glue-nailed beams were 7 and 34 percent stiffer, than the theoretical maximum for the moment and shear tests respectively. The ultimate strengths of the nailed beams were 8 and 22 percent more than the unreinforced beams for the moment and shear tests respectively, while for the glue nailed beams the ultimate strengths were 22 and 37 percent more than the unreinforced beams for the moment and shear tests respectively. The steel reinforcement decreased deflection by 30 to 40 percent when compared with the unreinforced beams at the same loads. ‘Reinforced beams were 50 to 100 percent stiffer than the unreinforced beams.
