Time-Dependent Properties of Particleboard Decking in Flexure

Southern yellow pine particleboard decking manufactured for modular home construction was evaluated for the effect of rate of loading and load duration on strength, and for creep under long term load. The rate of loading study indicates that, for a tenfold increase in time to failure, MOR of both urea and phenolic-bonded particleboard decking decreased by 6 percent. The load duration study indicated that the average decrease in stress level for a tenfold increase in time to failure for both particleboard types was 8.6 percent. The intercepts of the load duration curves for the two particleboard types were significantly different, suggesting that a difference in time to failure at a given stress level may exist. Both particleboards exhibited linear elastic and linear viscoelastic behavior. Creep deflection for a 10-year constant loading was estimated to be slightly less than the initial elastic deflection.
