The rough mill operation in a furniture plant uses a sequence of steps to produce the desired components — cross cutting, surfacing both sides, jointing one or both edges, ripping to width and, if necessary, edge gluing followed by planing to thickness. The direct labor costs vary with lumber grade; lower grades of lumber require more operator time to develop maximum yield from the lumber. Several illustrations are given of the techniques of determining direct labor costs during breakout, and converting these to a cost per (net) foot of cuttings. The value of these studies lies in aiding the choice of lumber grades, choosing machinery for production jobs, planning a rough mill layout, evaluating the labor in a rough mill, costing the cuttings produced, and as a guide to the furniture design which will produce the lowest unit cost.
