Tomorrow’s Product from the Trees of Today

Several potential new uses for wood products in the home are described: thin plywood sheets bent to standard shapes, perforated plywood, corrugated wood, deep-scored plywood that can be readily bent and applied to convex and concave surfaces, decorative particleboard with marble-like surfaces coated with transparent wear-resistant surfaces, wooden cabinet hardware, plywood egg crate dividers, and woven veneer products. The author proposes the use of a combination of steel and wood in such things as a steel-reinforced prestressed laminated beams. He also predicts the return of wood to the kitchen, in which appliances will be built into wooden cabinets. The growth of the built-in storage wall in housing is predicted to destroy the case goods business of today, with the case goods manufacturers shifting to the manufacture of modular units for storage walls, and selling these to the builder or architect rather than to the furniture dealer.
