Small clear specimens were machined and tested for toughness according to ASTM standards. Specimens were obtained from healthy and spruce budworm-killed balsam fir. Toughness averaged 141 inch-pounds for clear specimens of healthy balsam fir and tended to decrease in upper tree heights with increasing time after budworm-caused mortality. Statistical comparisons revealed a decrease in toughness for certain tree heights and categories. For particular applications where shock resistance is important, caution should be exercised in the use of wooden members from budworm-killed balsam fir.
