A linear variable differential transform, LVDT, was evaluated as a strain gage for wood. The LVDT gage was found to be far superior to an 8-inch extensometer utilizing 0.0001 inch dial gages and approached the SR-4 strain gage in accuracy. Use of the LVDT gage is suggested for strains resulting from stresses in the order of 1000 psi or more.
