Tests on the treatability of shortleaf pine by the cold soaking method indicate that treating time varies inversely with post diameter. Four-inch posts require half the time to treat than required for 3-inch posts. As the temperature of the preservative increases, the average treating time decreases. Growth rate, as measured by annual ring count, has no significant effect on treating time. Raising wood temperatures 10?F. to 30?F. above the preservative temperature produces no significant results. Uniformity of treatment within a given batch of posts is practically impossible by cold soaking.
