Fungus infection is quite common in southern yellow pine posts and is not always readily apparent. It is now known that the so-called harmless molds greatly influence the permeability of southern yellow pine. Experiments in the cold soaking of full length fence posts of fungus-infected and uninfected southern yellow pine showed that after 2 days soaking, the average preservative retention of the badly infected posts was almost 10 times as high as those uninfected. The slightly infected posts had retentions 4 times as high as those uninfected. For uninfected southern yellow pine, the posts of larger diameters showed lower retentions but deeper retention of the preservative than those of smaller diameters. The difference, however, is not great. The opposite results reported by other investigators might be due to the infection of their samples by fungus.
