The State Highway Commission of Wisconsin is using treated wood posts for purposes ranging from simple marking of right of way to elaborate fencing and signs. Wood posts are used for support of signs and markers along most of the 12,000-mile state trunk highway system. Wisconsin averages above 74 percent relative humidity, 30 inches of precipitation annually, and a temperature range during the year of from 30 or 40 degrees below zero to over 100 degrees. There are also extremes of soil conditions. Wood posts prove to be economical and durable under the severe weather conditions. When preservatives are applied to hardy, carefully selected species, wood posts and supports will give years of service with low original cost, easy installation and maintenance, and an attractive natural appearance. Specifications for defect limitation and for type and method of application of preservatives are important in making this program successful.
