Tropical Wood Evaluation and Utilization

A system for evaluation, including sample selection, preparation, handling, and testing, was developed by Potlatch Forests, Inc. to establish reasonable property values and to indicate possibilities for utilization of several tropical hardwood species being imported from operations in Tumaco, Colombia, S. A. and Asau, Western Samoa. ASTM Standard Procedures (D-143 and D-2555) were followed as closely as practical. Lack of adequate species distribution data, difficulties in obtaining and shipping test materials, and limitations on test facilities dictated some deviation from the standards. Samples for evaluation of a species were obtained from five logs selected at the logging site. Herbarium materials for botanical classification were collected from some of the same trees. Cants, 3 inches thick by at least 8 inches in width and 8 feet in length, were cut from each log in the sawmill, labeled, dipped in anti-fungal solution and shipped to the U.S. for testing. Standard specimens were prepared from the cants and tested in the green and dry (12 percent) conditions. Comparison of results with published species data, when available, indicates good agreement. Test of machinability, gluability, finishing and other properties related to specific use requirements were conducted on lumber from the same trees. These data can be used for grouping of species with similar properties to, obtain merchantable quantities and can indicate species peculiarities that may influence utilization.
