Spore germination of four mold and sapstain fungi on small agar disks in diffusion contact with preservative-treated plywood was used to rank performance of seven fungicides. Results obtained in 48 hrs were in close agreement with those in a 6-week evaluation of spore-inoculated samples incubated over water in pint jars. Treatment concentrations, as well as loss of efficacy loss after Weatherometer exposure of samples were indicated by spore germination response. The simplicity of this test method make it valuable in screening potential wood preservative chemicals.
