Unusual Design in Falsework Transmits Internal Forces By Use of Friction

Quick assembly and dismantling are features of an unusual design for timber falsework used in the construction of concrete-arch bridges. The falsework described in this article uses a single grade of lumber of a single width, and full reuse of the construction components is made possible by the elimination of any fastening devices. The three-tier, trussed-arch falsework was designed to take advantage of the fact that only the bottom plate of the multiple-box concrete arch had to be supported by the falsework. After setting of the bottom-plate concrete, the bottom plate could support the weight of the exterior and intermediate webs and the top plate of the multiple-box concrete arch, subsequently poured.
