The upgrading of quality and performance in the sealing of joints in residential construction is possible and desirable. Some improvement can be obtained with conventional caulks by exercising greater care in joint design and preparation, as well as application. The greater advantages in performance possible with many of the new, higher performance sealants well justify their slight additional initial cost. It is estimated that use of one of the higher performance sealants for a house in the $25,000. price range will increase the cost approximately $15 over use of a traditional oil-base caulk.
