The use of carbide knives on oak flooring has shown that by using $2,100 worth of carbide knives and cutters, the tool cost per lineal foot would run approximately 2 mills on the first run. Sharpening of all cutters could be done for under $50. On the basis of one and one-quarter million lineal feet of production, this maintenance cost would be a small fraction of one mill per lineal foot of flooring on subsequent runs. Carbide woodworking tools are both efficient and economical when they are applied carefully on stable machines where production, finish, or accuracy requirements justify their application, and operated and maintained accurately on an established schedule.
