Using Speed of Sound in Wood to Monitor Drying in a Kiln

The speed of ultrasonic pulses through specimens of lumber being dried in a kiln was shown to be well correlated with changes in moisture content of the specimen, thus establishing the feasibility of using the speed of sound in the severe kiln environment to monitor drying progress. The influence of temperature and moisture gradients was defined.
