Though some bark is employed in the production of fiberboard in Norway, the amount used is but a small fraction of the total bark available. In attempting to determine possible uses for unused bark residues in established Norwegian forest products industries, it appeared that fiberboard was the only industry that might be in a position to use more bark. Accordingly laboratory hardboard studies were made on the three major bark species available in Norway, namely, spruce, pine, and birch. Fresh green slabs of each species were secured, and the bark was separated from the wood. The bark and wood were chipped separately, and wood-bark compositions made up of 100 percent wood; 75 percent wood and 25 percent bark; and 50 percent bark and 50 percent wood were defiberized in a laboratory Asplund defibrator, followed by raffination until desired pulp freeness was obtained. These studies indicated that pine bark, in particular, along with spruce bark, can be used in sizeable quantities with wood in producing a satisfactory commercial hardboard.
