Utilization of Low-Grade Softwood Lumber

Increasing demand for lumber in the postwar years has encouraged better utilization of the tree, resulting in the recovery from our forests of 20 to 25 percent more of the tree than in prewar years. This increase is generally due to a relatively larger production of lumber of the lower grades. In the Douglas-fir region, the lower grades now comprise 25 percent of the cut as compared with 8 to 10 percent before the war. In order to continue this trend it is necessary to find markets for the increasing quantities of No. 3 lumber.
