The production of lumber products from softwood logs becomes a function of the competing uses for the same log. In order to obtain logs for manufacture at a competitive cost, efficiencies in lumber manufacture and in the marketing of lumber products are required. Competition for softwood logs is examined relative to region and to final product. The trend is the same in each region. Prices for plywood peelers and for pulp logs force lumber manufacturers to increase bids for logs which are of lower quality than previously obtained. The result is that inefficient lumber operations cannot compete. Improved marketing and manufacturing techniques are needed to insure softwood lumber its share of the logs and a share of the building material market.
