Utilizing Residues from Western Red Cedar Mills

Sawmill residues created between log pond and green chain were measured at three cedar sawmills. Total volume of sawdust produced averaged 18.7 percent of the cubic log volume or 0.56 units per Mfbm or 940 lbs. bone-dry weight per Mfbm. The solid residues amounted to 18.3 percent or 0.6 cords of the cubic volume going into the mill. Log size considerably affects volume of solid waste. In the shingle mill, sawdust residue amounted to 32.7 percent and solid residue was 27.1 percent. A separate study on bark residues showed that, for every 100 cubic feet of wood, there are 6.9 cubic feet of bark. Bark loss due to logging and handling reduces this to 5.3 cubic feet by the time the logs arrive at the sawmill. Very little cedar residue is used. Bark has a value of 9,700 BTU per pound. A little cedar sawdust and logged material is used for briquettes. Pulpmills use only up to 23 percent for blending with other chips.
